roses and books This article appeared on MobileRead.com, we are posting here re-slightly modified, with permission of its author. Today, April 23 is World Book Day and the Law Copyright. This event organized by UNESCO (United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was born in Spain in 1923, where the commemoration of the death of Cervantes by booksellers has partnered with the festival Sant Jordi (St. George) to create a new tradition: giving flowers, and ... books.
The intention of the World Book and Copyright, according to UNESCO:
By celebrating this Day throughout the world, UNESCO seeks to promote reading, industry publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. According
official site:
On April 23, 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega said the Inca. This April 23 also marks the birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. Therefore, this highly symbolic date for world literature, was chosen by the General Conference of UNESCO in order to pay homage to the book and its authors, and encourage everyone, especially younger, discover the joy of reading and respect the contribution of creators to social progress and cultural development.
The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia (Spain) where it is traditional to offer a rose for the purchase of a book. The success of this initiative depends largely on the support can be provided by interested parties (authors, publishers, booksellers, librarians and educators, public and private institutions, NGOs and the media) that are mobilized in each country through commissions Commissions for UNESCO Associations, Centres and Associations, networks of schools and associated libraries and all those who feel motivated to participate in this worldwide celebration.
Last year, a member of the forum MobileRead.com suggested that we seek ways to involve the ebooks at the party: for example, continuing the tradition that the Catalan booksellers offered a rose for every book purchased , flower shops offered a book for each rose purchased, and the men offered roses to the women who responded by offering a book, he suggested that we could offer virtual roses for each ebook purchased, or maybe we could offer e-roses authors we like (provided that their books are available in digital publishing, of course!). Nice idea as I find!
