Among the many areas that I cover professionally, it is one that particularly fascinates me is justice. On several occasions in the year, I attend particularly to the trial court of Assizes. When we discover the acts considered, the personalities of the accused, the victims' families, one plunges into the depths of the human soul, especially its dark sides. Attend these trials, and of course write the report, is a fascinating exercise, constantly renewed. When I get home from Court at night, you may not know how much I am happy to see my family .... In June, I covered two trials (5 ½ days attendance at Court in all!) And my impression is always the same. We do not really have the same advantages at birth ... Obviously. And then another feeling drives me and our Justice does not work so badly. In Assisi, we take the time to listen, to try to understand what motivated the defendants to commit such crimes. This is reassuring and the presence of a jury is also important to make an impartial justice, soothed. Challenging the popular jury would, in my opinion, a grave mistake and would lead to speedy justice. Finally, these trials are also an opportunity to listen to beautiful rhetorical exercises. Like all corporations, there are good and bad. But the benefit of lawyers in Assisi often fly high and I happened to drop, quietly, a few tears. The next session of the Assizes of the Charente-Maritime will take place around 15 November. The hearings are open to the public, but obviously it should be noted permanent silence.
